If you are into Josh Homme, The Distillers, Eagles of Death Metal, ... like we are, you certainly know Maton guitars already. For the others, let us introduce you to this Australian guitar company by presenting one of their coolest model: the Maton MS500-HC.
This Australian beauty has got everything it takes to make you fall in love. The workmanship is superb. It's not often that you see such a nice looking guitar, with a perfect work on the entire body. The table in blackwood (an Australian acacia) is amazing and the sound hole is a smoking hot masterpiece. The maple neck has a very thin satin varnish on it. The wood veins are thin, well aligned, promising some very good vibrations transmission. The rosewood fretboard is absolutely nice, nicer than what some other prestigious brands propose nowadays... The model we tested is in a color called "natural", truly gorgeous with its classic vintage look.
For the rest of the specs, we have: Grover machine heads, bolt-on neck with 4 screws, 24.5 inches scale, 12" radius, medium jumbo frets, white binding, thick 1-ply white pickguard, 1 volume and 1 tone, 2 Maton Alnico 5 Humbuckers (the one on the bridge being splittable), and a good looking rotary selector.
In hands it's a little weird at the beginning. The scale is rather short, like on Gibson guitars, so you have the impression to play a little bit more "on the right" than if you would play a strat. Since we are used to thick varnish on our guitars, this one having more of a satin feel, we need a couple of minutes to find our marks and have our thumbs steady. The rotary selector may look strange at first, but actually it's very practical, way more practical than the Fender selectors. And it looks awesome too, especially with the captions around it: "Hi-Fi" (bridge), "Cool" (neck) and Midway (well, that's... midway :-p). After 30 minutes of playing, any player is totally used to the beast and can start to make it roar.
This guitar is stylish but it also has a lot of character! The sustain is very long. The pickups are amazing. We appreciate their capacity to transcript all the tiny details, without ever being harsh. With a good distortion, you can really hear some nice grain. The guitar comes with a perfect setup and all our bends passed like a dream. From blues to stoner, this guitar is perfect. But as you can imagine, metal or shred won't probably fit.
To summarize, this is a excellent guitar in terms of aesthetic and sound. The build quality is top notch which make it an exceptional instrument. In hands, you will need a couple of minutes to get used to it, but it's worth it, for sure!!!
